Sales Engineer Playbook · Skill
The STAR method, and the demo they'll also make you do
Interviewing is the ability to demonstrate your competence and fit in a selection conversation — by preparing relevant evidence, answering behavioural and technical questions in a clear structure, and engaging authentically with the interviewer.
Why most people get it wrong
- • Rambling, unstructured answers
- • Vague examples with no result
- • Over-rehearsed, robotic scripts
- • Bluffing on things not done
- • Badmouthing past employers
- • No questions for the interviewer
What "strong" looks like in this move
- • STAR stories ready for SE competencies: technical explanation, demo support, discovery, trust, AI-leverage.
- • A rehearsed mock demo you can deliver calmly.
- • Honest, reasoned answers on technical gaps ("I haven't run a full POC, here's how I'd scope one").
- • Smart questions about the SE team, the product and how success is measured.
For the SDR → Sales Engineer move
The SE interview is distinctive: alongside behavioural questions it almost always includes a technical/demo component — a mock demo, a whiteboard of how you'd solve a customer problem, or a "explain this concept simply" test. So an SDR interviewing for SE must perform on two fronts: STAR stories that prove SE-relevant behaviours (helping AEs, technical curiosity, customer empathy) *and* a live demonstration of technical communication. This skill is also where every other skill's Interview stage pays off — the story bank you build across skills is the ammunition here.
Try it today
Write one STAR story for an SE competency and test it on a peer.
Ten minutes. One real thing, not a study session.
How you'd show it
- • An SE-focused STAR story bank (mapped to SE competencies).
- • A completed mock SE interview (behavioural + a mock demo) with feedback.
- • A "explain a technical concept simply" answer, recorded and critiqued.
