Sales Engineer Playbook · SDR → Sales Engineer

"How do I actually make this move?"

There's no formal ladder for this one — it's a specialization, usually earned quietly before it's ever advertised. That's frustrating if you're waiting for a posting, and useful once you know it.

Why this happens

SDR → AE has a well-worn path with clear milestones (quota attainment, deal size). SDR → SE doesn't, because it's a change in kind, not degree — you're not doing more of the same job better, you're building a different set of skills entirely.

Why the obvious fix doesn't work

Waiting for an internal posting rarely works, because most SE hires happen before the req is written — someone already knew the person could do it. Applying externally without evidence competes against people who've already done the job.

What actually changes it

Visible, specific evidence, built while you're still an SDR: real technical depth, a demo you've actually run, and an SE manager who's seen you do SE-shaped work before you ever ask for the role.

Today's 10-minute version

Ask one Sales Engineer what new SEs struggle with most. Don't ask for mentorship — ask one specific question, listen, and write the answer down.
