Sales Engineer Playbook · SDR → Sales Engineer

"There's no SE role here to move into."

That's a real constraint, not a reason to stop. It usually means the evidence you build has to travel with you to a different company, not that the move itself is closed off.

Why this happens

Not every company has SE headcount — smaller or earlier-stage companies especially often lean on AEs or founders for the technical parts of a sale. No internal seat doesn't mean no path.

Why the obvious fix doesn't work

Waiting for your company to eventually build an SE function wastes time you don't get back, and there's no guarantee it happens on your timeline — or at all.

What actually changes it

Building the same evidence you would internally — depth, a demo, a documented technical win — and taking it externally. Companies hiring their first SEs are often more open to a strong SDR with real proof than a rigid "must have SE title" requirement.

Today's 10-minute version

Find two companies with an SE team similar in size to yours. Look at what their SE job postings actually ask for, and compare it honestly to where you are.
